The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
